It’s that time of year again when lots of pressure is placed on families to be happy go lucky and spend time with people they don’t want to spend time with or that they do not usually spend time with!
It is also the time that unbelievable strains can be placed on relationships that have failed or are failing. As a result, despite the festive time of year, incidents of domestic abuse can rear their head, more than normal. What do you do in those circumstances?
Firstly, if you, or those around you, are at immediate physical risk, do not hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the police. No matter what the setting, physical violence or threats to commit violence or harm remain criminal offences as do certain other things such as controlling or coercive behaviour.
If you are the victim of domestic abuse, remove yourself from the setting, if possible, even if it is just to let matters calm down. Remember to shield the children from any abuse, if possible. Abuse towards children is not just behaviour directed at them. They can suffer emotional harm if they see those around them being abused.
Once you are away from the unacceptable behaviour, seek help. Below are links to various organisations that support victims of domestic abuse. They have helplines and can offer support and counselling, as well as practical help, to abuse victims.
Lastly, seek advice from a fully qualified, experience solicitor such as one within our family team here at Harrowells. We can assist in obtaining non-molestation orders (aka injunctions), orders to prevent abusers from coming to you home, as well as offer advice as to the best options for you. Remember, abusive behaviour is unacceptable and you don’t need to put up with it!
